Why Do Christians Still Struggle?

If the Holy Spirit lives in every believer, why do Christians still battle temptation, wrestle with old habits, and sometimes fail so badly? The Bible answers that tension by showing that the Spirit's presence produces changed direction, not instant perfection. God doesn't excuse our sin, but neither does He abandon us in it. He is patiently transforming us over time.

First, the Spirit Guides Us into Truth

Jesus promised that the Spirit would guide His people into the truth. The Spirit never leads us away from Christ or contrary to God's Word. A helpful question to ask is: Who has more influence over what I believe? God's Spirit through Scripture or the voices constantly filling my screens?

Second, the Spirit Produces New Desires

When God saves us, He doesn't simply forgive us; He begins changing what we want. Galatians 5 describes the ongoing conflict between the flesh and the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit isn't a checklist for earning God's favor but evidence that His transforming work is already taking place in us.

Third, the Spirit Transforms Us Over Time

The Bible calls this lifelong process sanctification. Justification frees us from sin's guilt. Sanctification loosens sin's grip. Glorification will one day free us from sin's presence. God calls us to actively pursue Him while faithfully accomplishing the work only He can do.

The Big Takeaway

The Holy Spirit's presence produces changed direction, not instant perfection. Christians still struggle with sin, but they no longer have to remain comfortable in it. God is faithfully making His people more like Jesus.

Read and pray through Galatians 5:16–25 this week. Ask God to reveal one area where you're following the desires of the flesh instead of keeping in step with His Spirit, then take one practical step of obedience.
